Clinical Hepatology

Clinical Hepatology

Clinical Hepatology was earlier considered to be the sub-speciality in Gastroenterology. But, in recent times, there is an increase in mortality due to liver diseases. It has lead to tremendous advancement & research to tackle the Liver problems. Hepatology deals with the study & management of Liver, Gall bladder, Biliary tree & Pancreas along with its disorders.

Alcohol & viral hepatitis are the main reason for the Hepatobiliary Pancreatic disorders. It is seen that about 80% of Liver cancers occur due to hepatitis B or C virus. Therefore, there is wide spread implementation of vaccination & screening before blood transfusion to reduce the rate of infection due to hepatitis B & C.

It was considered that cirrhosis of liver which is end stage Liver disease occurs only due to alcohol. Although Alcohol still stands to be the main etiology for cirrhosis, it is to be noted that due to sedentary lifestyle there is increase in number of Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) & Non- Alcoholic slea to hepatitis (NASH) which eventually terminates into cirrhosis.

NAFLD/ NASH are reversible conditions which when diagnosed early & treated with lifestyle modifications and regular follow-ups with hepatologist can be cured and end up in a healthy life.

With the advent of Liver transplantation, cirrhotic patient have got new lease of hope for survival. We at Bhatwal Surgical and Maternity Hospital, with a team of Hepatologist & Liver Transplant Surgeon (Surgical Gastroenterologist) together form the best duo to help our cirrhotic patients.
